Whether it's shift planning, holiday planning, or coordinating appointments with family and friends – in the final quarter of the current year, many people are already focusing on the new year. This is because those who have long-term appointments, from weddings to holiday bookings, often benefit from early planning. In many companies too, the (rough) holiday planning for the year is often discussed early on within the team.
Smart holiday planning with the public holidays in 2023
As every year, many employees face the question of how to best combine their existing holiday days with public holidays in the year.
Here are some tips from us on how to get the most out of your holidays:
- From Good Friday, 7 April 2023, to Easter Monday, 10 April 2023, you'll have four days off in a row without even needing a public holiday – unless you, for example, regularly work Saturdays in retail.
- If you also take four days of leave before Easter (3rd to 6th April 2023), you will have ten consecutive days of leave, including the two weekends and the two public holidays.
- In May, it makes sense to combine Ascension Day (May 18th) with an extra day of leave to create a long weekend with four days off.
- If you invest five extra days of leave, you’ll have a whole 12 days off in a row thanks to the Whit Monday bank holiday (29 May) – and for everyone without school-aged children, this will also be outside of the school holidays.
- Besides the additional bridging holiday of Corpus Christi (08 June 2023), this year the Day of German Unity (03.10.) also conveniently falls on a Tuesday, allowing it to be extended into a long weekend with just one day of leave.
- All Bavarians are lucky too: The Assumption of Mary (15 August 2023) also falls on a Tuesday, making it suitable for a bridging day.„
The holiday depends on the place of work.
Did you know that for a public holiday to be valid, your place of work is what counts?
So, for example, if someone lives in Hesse, which has fewer public holidays than other federal states, but works in Bavaria or Baden-Württemberg, they can be pleased: because they will then have time off, when perhaps their neighbours who work in Hesse have to work.
Special holidays
In addition to the usual holidays around Easter, Pentecost, Christmas, New Year, and German Unity Day, as well as religious holidays – depending on the federal state – such as Ascension Day, Corpus Christi, Reformation Day, or All Saints' Day, there are also special holidays in some federal states:
- 20th September is an annual public holiday in Thuringia for World Children's Day.
- On 8 March, there is a public holiday in Berlin – and since 2023, also newly in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – for International Women's Day.
- Some cities or regions also have special public holidays, such as Augsburg annually with the Festival of Peace on 8 August.
